SHORE EXCURSION ODESSA: itinerary
At the port of Odessa we will meet our guide, who will accompany us on the walking tour of the city.
Our shore excursion begins along the main street of Deribasivska, a long pedestrianized strip flanked by elegant buildings. Here, we can admire the monument to poet and playwright, Alexander Pushkin, before continuing to the Potemkin Stairs.
At the top of the climb, we’ll find a statue to Duke Richelieu, a French aristocrat who the stairs were originally named after. Richelieu fled France during the revolution and became the first mayor of Odessa.
Nearby we’ll also find the grandiose Odessa Opera and Ballet Theatre constructed in a stunning Viennese-Baroque style.
Our Odessa shore excursion will continue to Ekaterininskaya Square and the grand statue of Catherine the Great.
We head then to Uspensky Cathedral, the main church of Odessa, otherwise known as the Transfiguration Cathedral. The facade is a combination of Russian and Byzantine style and the church also three domes and a grand bell tower.
