SHORE EXCURSION SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA: itinerary

We’ll leave the port of Vigo and head by bus to Santiago de Compostela. The city is part of a pilgrimage route dating back to the ninth century and is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Spain.

Lets start our shore excursion in the Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to Santiago de Compostela Cathedral. Guides are not permitted to give tours inside, so we’ll learn about the ornate façade from the square Praza do Obradoiro outside. Inside the church we can see the 12th century Portico da Gloria and the crypt, which houses the relics of Saint James.

Next to the cathedral is Pazo de Xelmírez, a 12th century bishops palace.

The Santiago de Compostela shore excursion continues to Plaza de la Quintana and Pazo de Fonseca. Built in 1544, this Gothic building is considered the origin of Compostela University.

Finally, we’ll wander along Rúa do Vilar and Rúa do Franco, two historic streets lined with shops, bars and cafes frequented by locals and tourists alike. Our bus will then take us back to port.
