Shore Excursion Mont Saint Michel: itinerary
From the port of Cherbourg the shore excursion leaves by bus to Mont Saint Michel, a drive that takes around two hours.
Once at Mont Saint Michel, we’ll walk for around 30 minutes to reach the famous Grand Rue. This narrow street is lined with buildings from the 15th and 16th centuries. At that time shops sold medals and souvenirs to early pilgrims. Today the small tourist shops are still more than happy to send you away with pockets full of trinkets and mementoes!
Along the Grand Rue, our Mont Saint Michel shore excursion will make a stop at the parish Church of St. Peter. Admire the statues of Joan of Arc guarding the church and of Saint Michel slaying a dragon.
Then, we’ll reach the Mont Saint Michel Abbey at the end of the Grand Rue. The focal point of the island, this Gothic abbey is one of the most visited cultural sites in France. There has been a place of worship on this site since the 9th century, although took on a new role as a prison in the 18th century.
From the abbey we’ll see some fantastic views of the surrounding landscape. We’ll finish our Mont Saint Michel shore excursion with some free time in this captivating spot.
After the visit we make our way back to the bus and then return to Cherbourg for boarding.
