Shore Excursion Helsinki and Porvoo: itinerary
From the port of Helsinki, we’ll make the 50 minute journey to the medieval city of Porvoo to begin our shore excursion. One of the oldest cities in Finland, it’s famous for its historic district characterized by narrow medieval streets and wooden houses.
Porvoo Cathedral dates from the 13th century when it was first constructed in wood. Over the years, brick and stone walls were added and the charming structure updated and modified. The church has been damaged by fire numerous times, including in 2006 when the entire roof collapsed.
Afterwards, you’ll have some free time to explore the historic town before continuing the shore excursion in Helsinki.
Via bus, we’ll do a sightseeing tour of the city. Helsinki is the capital and a political and cultural centre in Finland so there’s lots fit in. Our tour passes Parliament House, the National Museum, Finlandia Hall, the Opera House and the Olympic Stadium.
We’ll visit the outside of Helsinki’s main attraction, Temppeliaukio Church. This modern palace of worship is amazing built directly into the solid rock landscape.
Finally, there’s a little time to conclude the Helsinki shore excursion with a brief stop at Senate Square. An opportunity to snap a photo of the largest orthodox church in Western Europe, Uspenski Cathedral.
