Shore Excursion Split: itinerary
As the most popular attraction in Split, it seems right to begin our shore excursion at the Diocletian’s Palace, built by the Roman emperor of the same name in the 4th century AD. More than just a residence, the structure also housed a military garrison and served as a defensive stronghold for the city.
In fact, the Roman palace is more than just one building; it includes about half of the old town of Split. As the heart of the city, around 3000 people live within the palace boundaries. Local residents mingle with tourists through the narrow passageways and go about their daily lives in amongst the ancient walls.
During our shore excursion we’ll visit the Golden Gate at the northern side of the palace. Here at the main entrance, you can pass through the same archway used by Diocletian when he entered his new home for the first time in 305 AD.
More recently, the Diocletian Palace featured on our TV screens in the hit show Game of Thrones. The lower levels of the palace were transformed into the perfect spot for heroine Daenerys Targaryen to lock away her dragons.
Back to the shore excursion, we’ll visit the Cathedral of Saint Domnius. The octagonal cathedral sits next to an imposing bell tower and is a sight to behold. The cathedral’s wooden doors are in fact a breathtaking example of Romanesque sculpture.
